Cave, caverns, and crystals

Post any cave, cavern, or cave formation scans here.

Remember:

  1. Do not share the location of non-public, wild caves.
  2. Do not go wild caving without others, and without experienced cavers who know what they are doing.
  3. Follow safe caving guidelines; the scan comes second.

Feel free to share tips for scanning dark places!

A scan of a passage with water under it.

For non-professional cavers, feel free to post scans of show caves or public cave entrances/shallow caverns, or even cool karst features!

@MisterE123 these are phenomenal! I now want to go visit the caves near me and splat them too. Did you use your mobile device flashlight or did you bring another light source?

I used my caving helmet LED light. Pretty sure that scaniverse disables using the phone light.

If you are in the US, you can join your local chapter of the National Speleological Society, and they will take you on caving trips.

There are often similar groups in other countries.

If you want to get a feel for it first, show caves offer “wild” caving tours.

Definitely use a waterproof phone, a case, and a screen protector.

Googling the nearest chapter chapter later this week!

Glorious! Such a cool application of splats here, you get a much better sense of the depth and colors than a video of the cave would IMO.

yeah, videos come out awful. the great thing about scaniverse for this application is that it seems to remember when a surface was lighted, and forget when it was not lighted.

If scaniverse was improved specifically for dark places that would be cool. Having a SLAM and Lidar usb c module to improve data would be really cool

I’m reading about extracting customer needs in project management for my engineering courses, so might as well consider what my needs were in this post as opposed to the proposed solution:

  • Make the model better at understanding both large and small-scale 3d structure.
  • Make it better adapted to the dark: allow it to lose visual cues for a time while recording.
  • Make the model more accurate and able to collect data over a wider area, while the camera is moved into any position through any small crevice
  • keep any improvements low-power and low cost, and preferably on-device, or with a reasonably cheap addon module.
