Scanning Buildings or Monuments, etc

Hello all, hopefully this hasn’t been asked before. I just downloaded the app and am wanting to take it out this weekend a few places. I’m just wondering for those who’ve played around with it - when scanning larger areas or smaller buildings - how do you do it?

Can this app work in conjunction with a drone?

Great question. There’s a video and several tips at How To | Scaniverse - 3D Scanner + LiDAR + Gaussian Splatting for iOS and Android.

From my experience, the most important thing to keep in mind is getting multiple angles on every surface. Move your body and your camera around in every way (channel your inner Raygun!). Pivoting around a single point like you’re taking a panoramic photo won’t work at all. Instead, make a spiral or flower-petal patterns of walking to get different distances and angles.

It doesn’t work with a drone. Scaniverse needs data beyond what’s in a video to process splats.

Hi Beck73,

Here are a couple large splats I’ve made and their corresponding scan paths:

Some advice:

  • ignore the “slow down” message
  • for really large objects stay far away- don’t try to walk up and scan for detail; just try to get the entire thing in frame from every possible angle within a few minutes
