There’s a statue in there, I promise!
This is a haiku stone monument made by Masaoka Shiki, who is very famous in Japan for composing haiku. A haiku is like a very short poem. During World War II, Masaoka Shiki was a soldier in Ujina, Hiroshima Prefecture. At that time, Masaoka’s friend, who was in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, where this monument is located, heard that he was about to go to the battlefield, so Masaoka came to Kure City to see his friend off. The haiku that Masaoka Shiki composed at that time is on the monument. Ujina and Kure City are about an hour away by train.
The Atomic Bomb Dome is registered as a World Heritage Site. It was built by Hiroshima Prefecture as a convention center. On August 6, 1945, it was half-destroyed by the atomic bomb, and its horrific appearance with its crumbling exterior walls and exposed steel frame still conveys the cruelty of war. It is one of the few buildings remaining from the time of the bombing, and is a symbol of the pledge to abolish nuclear weapons and seek peace for all mankind.

A legend of a dragon god passed down in a hot spring resort.
Once upon a time, there was a pond called “Pine Pond” in this area. There was a white snake that was training to become a god. After training, the snake became a dragon god. The dragon god disguised himself as a fox and caused hot springs to gush forth in the area.It is said that the night before the hot springs erupted, foxes appeared in the dreams of people living in the area and that they heard foxes crying. This was the beginning of this hot spring resort in 1904.
To commemorate the 120th anniversary of this event, a giant statue of the dragon god was created in 2024.
