This lathe was installed and put into use in 1938 at a military factory in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture. It was imported from Germany by the Japanese Navy to manufacture barrels for the world’s largest main gun (45-caliber, 46-centimeter gun) to be mounted on the Yamato-class battleships. Installed at the military factory in Kure, it was responsible for the process of machining the outer diameter of the gun barrels. After the war, the machine was passed on to Kobe Steel Ltd. (Takasago Factory) and Kishiro Ltd. (Harima Factory), and has been involved in the manufacture of crankshafts, propeller shafts and other components for large ships for around 70 years.

This is the symbolic dome at Kure Portopia Park in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Until about 20 years ago, the second floor was a chapel where weddings were held. I had my wedding here about 20 years ago. At night, it was lit up in purple and they even had big fireworks. It’s a very fond memory. Currently, it is used by many people as a multi-purpose hall.
