Import assets back into Scaniverse

I would really like to be able to make use of Scaniverse’s tools for high-quality video fly-through renders of my scans for splats that have been processed outside of the mobile app.

In my use case, I made some scans that I was able to clean up to a certain extent with the app’s cropping tools, but in order to fully get what I wanted, I needed to export the .PLY and use an external desktop workflow in Unity to clean up the remaining noisy points that I wanted to crop out. I would love to be able to bring those cleaned-up splats back into Scaniverse and do my final video render there, but the app only has export options.

I understand the can of worms this could potentially open up; there is no guarantee that the files you can bring in began as Scaniverse splats and they may not have location data attached to them etc. for VPS registration purposes. But I would expect at least an implicit support for these files to show up in my drafts upon accessing the iOS app folder from my Mac Finder window, or something.

I wanted to additionally add as a comment that the ability to convert from PLY to SPZ would sure be nice, in whatever form that takes, be it native to the app or via a desktop/web utility. At the present moment, SPZ is a great proposal for a new generalized compressed file format, but only being able to go between Scaniverse and Niantic Studio is pretty limited.

Niantic creating a bare-bones conversion utility for desktop that converts PLY to SPZ at a bare minimum would also be super appreciated.

Hi Cloudcanvas,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your valuable feedback! Importing external files is something we’re often asked about and is something we’re looking into. What’s more, your suggestion for a utility to convert existing PLYs to SPZ would be a great way for developers to make use of their existing splats in Niantic Studio and other applications. I will pass this along!

Kind regards,
Maverick L.
