Book reader

Ok, this is weird.

Look at thes “relaxing places”: Proposal: scans of relaxing places - #2 by Knighthonor

Now, imagine being there reading a book.

Now, imagine simulating being there with a Meta Quest! All we need is a “hole” in the splat, and passthrough implementation: in this way, through the hole we will be able to actually see a real book in our hands, and even read it!
I actually tried it with another splat viewer: it works! It’s a little tricky, but it works: you have to import the splat into an editor, delete a part of it to create the “hole”, then import it into a viewer (which can’t be Scaniverse because it does not allow importing splats), and the magic is done: it’s winter, it’s cold, it’s rainy… but you are at the seaside reading a book… without moving from your sofa!

Procedure

Convert your SPZ to PLY with Storysplat, cleanup the splat with Supersplat, convert back to SPZ wirh Storysplat, copy to your Quest and open it with Wakufactory viewer.

I collected links to further splat editors and viewers here, in case anybody wants to experiment:

It would be even better if we could read Kindle ebooks inside Scaniverse viewer, but this would be very more complex due to DRM, and it would probably reuquire a commercial partnership between Scaniverse and Amazon.

Some splats to experiment with:

Hello,

Thanks for sharing this is a really cool idea! Scaniverse is a more general purpose tool so implementing something like this likely wouldn’t be on the roadmap (not to mention the DRM issues as noted) but we always like to see what other users come up with when exploring our products
