Improve "share link" and "post to map" menu items

“Share link” and “post to map” menu items are quite confusing:

  • “Share link” does not just share, it uploads and shares
  • “Post to map” doesn’t always upload: sometimes it uploads, sometimes it just sets the visibility property from “unlisted” to “public” for an already uploaded scan.

Possible solution/improvement:

  • “Share link”: I would change it to “Share scan”; if the scan has not yet been uploaded, it should show a warning “scan not uploaded yet, do you want to upload it first? Y/N”, else show the upload dialog (see below)
  • “Post to map”: I would change it to “Upload scan”, and it should open an upload panel with a “Visibility” option with 2 checkboxes: “public” and “unlisted”; probably “unlisted” checked by default would be better, but it’s just a personal opinion.

And of course a more detailed error message upon failed upload would help a lot: currently an error in attempting to change the visibility flag from unlisted to public of an already uploaded scan results in “upload error” message, and real upload errors result in a generic “upload error” without explanation: file too big? no network? no response from server?

Hi JumpJack,

Thank you again for taking the time to share detailed feedback on improvements you’d like to see to Scaniverse!

I completely understand where you’re coming from regarding the misleading sharing function terminology, and agree that these terms or the sharing process itself deserves a revisit.

We’re often asked for more detailed error messages or explanations for particular scan failures, and have discussed improving error messages internally. Keep your eyes peeled on the Scaniverse Blog!

Happy Scanning!
